Hounslow u18 Boys and Girls volleyball teams both finished 8th in the 2010 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games qualifiers held at the Score Centre (East London). Players were selected from Hounslow Manor, Lampton School, Feltham Community College, Cranford, Gumley School, and West Thames College and both teams played exceptionally well on the day given that they were one of the youngest teams in the competition all from year 9, 10 and 12 and are all eligible to play again next year. This made their achievement even more impressive as they were competing against players who were two to three years older.
Richmond Volleyball (London Sports Club of the Year 2010 & clubmark 2 club) senior coach commented, “This is the first time we have worked with Hounslow to develop teams for London Youth Games and as our part of our vision to develop volleyball in South West London our involvement will help support the development of volleyball across schools in Hounslow and provide coaching and leadership programmes to support the long term sustainability of the sport within the Borough. We’re very proud of these boys & girls having been selected from the successful nine weeks volleyball programme supported by '95.8 Capital FM Help a London Child' .
We started the programme delivering four weeks of mixed volleyball session to a number of Hounslow Secondary Schools and then continued with a further four weeks team training at a central venue hosted by West Thames College. In total nearly 90 young people (40% girls and 60% boys) were involved in the volleyball programme and attendance was very positive. All the players made significant progress learning 3 touch volleyball (dig, set, spike) and they now need to continue with more regular training and discipline to progress to the next level. Many of the players involved in the LYG will be invited to attend the Richmond Volleyball Junior Development Centre currently held at Tiffin Boys School (Kingston) and hopefully as a result of this positive impact Richmond Volleyball will be able to create another junior development centre in Hounslow.
Jo Valks (Hounslow Community Development Team) commented, ‘We are very pleased with Richmond Volleyball and their commitment and enthusiasm especially for the girls programme as this was our first time entry to Games. The London Youth Games are events at the heart of youth sport in the capital and they involve all 33 London boroughs and 26 national governing bodies.
