LYG Brings Volleyball to College

Volleyball lands with a SMASH at West Thames College.

As part of the London youth Games initiative to recruit and find talent in Volleyball in Hounslow, Fusions’ Sport development Team – Jo valks and Chris Jones supplied schools in Hounslow with the opportunity to access a series of 3 FREE coaching sessions delivered by David Rijvers from Richmond Volleyball Club. These coaching opportunities come of the back of a successful bid to Help a London Child and Balfour Beatty put forward by Jo Valks.

The coaching sessions were offered across schools in the Hounslow borough and West Thames College jumped at the opportunity to be involved. With the coaching dates being aligned with the opening of the new Atrium Sports facility it posed a fantastic opportunity for the Sports Staff to get students involved in the sport as well as learning what the new building has to offer.

The coaching sessions have been running on Friday lunchtime from 12.20-1.20pm and have proved a great success with a total of 21 students attending at least one of the sessions over the 3 week period.

With the sessions finishing on Friday 21st May, the selection for the London Youth Games will now be made by the coach, selecting players (Under 18 years of age) from Hounslow. West Thames College will act as the central training hub for the squad teams every Tuesday night leading up to the competitions in June.

So where do we go from here?

Due to the success of the Friday lunchtime sessions we are now in discussions with Richmond Volleyball to employ a qualified coach for a recreational volleyball club – with the potential to develop a competitive side to enter into a local/national college league.
