On Wednesday 5th May Higher Sports Leaders from Isleworth and Syon and Community Sport Leaders from the Green School organised the Isleworth & Syon SSP Yr 5 & 6 Girls six-a-side football competition after school. The sixth formers have been developing their leadership skills by volunteering in both School and the Community throughout the year. As part of their course they needed to organise a sporting event for children. With the lack a Primary Girls football competition in the partnership, the Sport leaders took on the daunting task of planning and organising the entire girls’ football tournament.
Having avoided bad weather, the tournament started with a total of nine teams split into two groups; with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the Cup competition and the next two teams qualifying for the plate competition. After a group stage packed with goals and individual performances that would be a match for any boy’s team, the Cup competition saw St Mary’s, Green Dragon, Our Lady and St John’s and Ivybridge qualify; with Chatsworth, Marlborough, the Blue School and Isleworth Town qualifying for the plate competition. A tight defence saw Isleworth Town take on penalty winners from the semis, the Blue School in the final of the plate. With home advantage, the hosts finished as eventual winners with a close 2-0 score line. The cup final saw two teams in St Mary’s and Our Lady’s with a perfect winning record pitted against each other. This final did not disappoint with the first minute bringing a penalty save from the Our Lady’s keeper after a handball denied St Mary’s a scoring opportunity. With the final whistle drawing nearer both teams were preparing for penalties; however a late goal from Our Lady’s saw them, crowned champions. After refreshments, photos and team congratulations, each player was awarded a certificate, the finalist’s medals and the winners a trophy. After hearing how many parents, staff and children called for a tournament next year we can safely assume the tournament was a success.
A big thank you must go to Isleworth Town Primary for hosting and Mr Mawn (SSCo) for coordinating the event and all the teachers, parents and girls who attended, without which such an event would not be possible. Congratulations also to the following HSLA students from Isleworth & Syon, Omar Sabri, Farooq Sabri, Mustafa Franka, Sandeep Unwith, Thomas Johnston, Yazad Cooper and CSLA students from the Green School, Kelly-Anne Clifford, Charlotte Potter and Rebecca Bevan. There is no doubt that all the Sport leaders enjoyed and gained invaluable experience in organising the event.
