On Tuesday 20th April 2010 Grasshoppers RFC hosted the Hounslow Borough Tag Rugby Union Competition. 16 primary schools from both the Isleworth & Syon and Feltham School Sport Partnerships brought mixed teams of Year 5 and 6 pupils for a day of high quality competitive experience.
35 Sports Leaders from local secondary schools supported the event as team managers, coaches, linesman and referees, 20 of which have an accredited qualification in tag rugby and have been coaching the teams in preparation for the event. The demonstration of skill and standard of ability was extremely high from all schools making it a very intense and exciting event to watch.
Winners and runners up of each pool got to battle it out in the Quarter Finals to gain a place in the Semis in the afternoon. Every match was enjoyable to watch due to the talent being such a recognisable standard and many participants were invited to trial for the Mini Youth Games Team to represent Hounslow as a result.
Isleworth Town and Spring Grove met in the Final to display some fantastic tag rugby in a close battle for 1st place. Isleworth Town just snatched the lead with a last minute try that saw them sale through as the Borough Winners. Both teams are now invited to represent Hounslow in the West London Finals on the 5th May to test their skills against the strongest schools from Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hammersmith & Fulham and Brent.
We would like to say a massive thank you to the Rugby Football Union who’s Community Rugby Coaches and Development Officers supported the event and delivered the coaching programme which enabled the Sports Leaders to become engaged and led to some terrific rugby being displayed on the day. Similarly we are extremely grateful to Grasshoppers RFC who allow us to use their fantastic facilities and are always exceptionally accommodating. We hope to see some of the talented players join the club next year in the minis section.
