Primary Tag Rugby Tournament, A Leaders’ Perspective by,
Aaron Openshaw (Yr 12 Isleworth & Syon)
On Tuesday 20th April, Sport Impact and the RFU organised the Borough Primary Tag Rugby tournament at Grasshoppers RFC. There were sixteen teams competing from across Hounslow. In January twenty Year 12 students from both Gunnersbury Catholic School and Isleworth & Syon School passed the RFU Tag Rugby course. Thereafter, most of theses students were assigned Primary Schools to coach in preparation for the tag rugby tournament. This involved coaches being mentored by Mr Mawn (SSCo) and RFU community coaches in delivering sessions in their Primary Schools. At the tournament the Tag Rugby coaches took warm ups and encouraged and motivated their team.
The tournament consisted of group stages and then a knock out competition. In each group there were four teams in which they played each other in a round robin format. The matches lasted fourteen minutes, two seven minute halves. The standard of play by all teams was very high, with few mistakes and lots of tries. After the group stages, eight teams progressed to the quarter-finals. In tight games, Isleworth Town and Spring Grove (the team I had been coaching) progressed to the Final. With some close calls and only one try separating the two teams, Isleworth Town edge passed Spring Grove 6 tries to 5. Both Isleworth Town and Spring Grove have also been invited to represent Hounslow at the West London Finals, also at Grasshoppers on Wednesday 5th May. Overall, it was a fun day in which everyone enjoyed themselves. The coaches also did a fantastic job in motivating their team and the teams certainly benefited and enjoyed having them around.
