Gumley House school organised a huge sports festival for 200 primary school students, 192 year 7 Gumley students and Year 10 and 11 sports leaders.
Gumley House School decided to invite Year 4 primary school pupils from five different schools: The Blue School, Isleworth Town, Our Lady and St. John, St. Mary’s RC School Chiswick and St. Michael and St. Martin. The sports festival would also include Gumley’s Year 7 students and 40 Year 10 and 11 Gumley sports leaders to lead the primary students through their activities.
Due to the size of the event, sports areas at St. Mary’s University College, Twickenham were hired. Expertise was on hand from the P.E staff, other teachers and Andy Killick, a local sports co-ordinator who helped to create the concept for the day and trained the student sports leaders. Additional help came from Brentford FC Sports Trust led by Luis Melville. The Community Sports Trust provided coaches for numerous activities, including: team building, tag rugby, handball, boxercise, tennis, football, inflatable football, golf, penalty shoot-outs, trampolining, dance mats and circus skills.
Enterprise skills
The Year 10 Enterprise students were involved in designing t-shirts with a brief to embody the seven Olympic and Paralympic Values. The finished t-shirts were worn by all the sports leaders on the day and brilliantly captured the essence of the event. Students also designed certificates awarded to members of each team and approached parents/relatives for ‘goody bag’ donations as prizes. Specifically named team building activities were deliberately included in the event to ensure that children of different ages worked collaboratively.
Olympic and Paralympic Values
The event reflected equality, friendship and respect by bringing together so many students from different schools. As well as becoming a celebration of diversity, the event enabled younger students to familiarise themselves with older students and helped to ease the transition process from the primary to the secondary phase.
Courage and determination were shown by many students who had a go at several activities they had not attempted before. The older students demonstrated the ability to stand back and assist the younger students when necessary and the presence of the Gumley sports leaders particularly helped in keeping a good balance between fair play and competition.
The scale of the event inspired pupils to participate and have great fun at the same time.
