Rebecca Killip won gold at the London Youth Games Cross Country on Saturday 19th November over a tough 2km race at Parliament Hill in North London. The infamous venue for cross country certainly lived up to expectations and held a number of challenges for the Hounslow athletes in the form of steep hills and bumps, something we’re not too used to seeing in the borough. However, Rebecca of Gumley House Convent School overcame the tough course and strong opposition to bring home gold for Hounslow by a convincing margin of six seconds.
Rebecca came to the London Youth Games with the purposeful ambition of winning the U15 title after achieving a bronze medal last year. Congratulations on a fantastic performance.
Other notable performance are 9th place achieved by Mohammed Nagi of Isleworth & Syon School, also in the U15 category and another Killip in the form of U13 Joe who achieved 22nd place despite being in the lower half of the age group. The U13 boys achieved the highest team position by Hounslow – 6th with Joe's 22nd place, Miles achieving 26th position and Joe Barnes' 31st contributing to the team score. A fantastic result for the U13 boys.
Athletes from all over Hounslow, including representatives from seven different schools ran in the Cross Country. For many it was a learning experience with only a handful currently with an athletic club, showing Hounslow has potential to climb up the leader board as an athletic club at Osterley Sports and Athletics Centre develops.
The schools represented were:
Chiswick Community School
Cranford Community College
Gumley House Convent School
The Heathland School
Heston Community School
Isleworth & Syon School for Boys
St. Mark’s Catholic School
Overall Hounslow were 17th out of 29 boroughs that competed at the Cross Country, earning valuable points for the 2012 London Youth Games standings.
